As one of the very first in the world, Scanfill is launching the new product Scanfoil rPP POP (Prevented Ocean Plastic). The plastic foil is made from post-consumer recycled PP (PCR) and is approved for food contact. The foil is available in various levels of transparency and is the first of its kind to be offered in large volumes. With properties equivalent to virgin PP, it has been long awaited by the market.

Recycled PP for food packaging

For a long time, demand has exceeded supply when it comes to high-quality recycled PP. An rPP that is also approved for food contact has been high on the wish list across Europe.

“What we can now offer is a transparent foil based on recycled PP that is approved for food contact since Regulation 2022/1616 entered into force. This is a major development, and we are very pleased to be able to offer it to our customers,” says Area Sales Manager Niklas Linde.

Mechanically recycled PCR

The rPP that Scanfill can now offer is a plastic foil consisting of 30 percent post-consumer recycled PP, developed to meet the upcoming PPWR requirements.

“The recycling method is advanced, but it enables large volumes of recycled PP. What our supplier has demonstrated is that it is possible to recycle PP that has been in consumer use, making rPP POP a real game changer for the industry,” says Karl Banke, Sustainability Specialist & Technical Support.

Before the plastic material is converted into foil, quality is thoroughly ensured.

“Our supplier runs the material through the advanced recycling process, which is essential for its approval for food contact applications. Once the material reaches Scanfill, we carry out a series of tests to once again ensure that the material is safe,” says Karl Banke.

Contributing to cleaner coastal areas

The new product offers full recyclability, traceability, and a clear environmental profile. The recycled raw material originates from plastic cups collected in coastal areas where they would otherwise risk contaminating oceans and rivers in Southeast Asia.

“For our customers, this foil means access to a high-quality recycled plastic foil, while also contributing to reduced pollution in coastal areas. Those interested can also find out exactly which geographical area their plastic can be traced back to,” says Niklas Linde.

Better recycled plastic starts with better collection ♻️

Prevented Ocean Plastic™ is collected from coastal areas before it reaches the ocean, helping preserve the quality of the recycled material while reducing pollution.

Today, Scanfill offers the concept in both Scanfoil rPP POP and Scanfoil rPET POP.

High quality. Real impact.

A high-performance recycled plastic foil that meets the quality manufacturers expect, while helping remove plastic waste from vulnerable coastal regions.

Whether you choose Scanfoil rPP POP or Scanfoil rPET POP, you're investing in recycled plastic with high transparency, traceable origin and cleaner coastal areas 🌍
